Related text tells us that the building is, "admirably calculated for the summer residence of the royal personage for whom it was built; and whose munificence and affability endear him to all who are not biased by party, blinded by prejudice, or hostile to dignified merit. This pavilion, correctly designed, and elegantly executed, was begun and completed in five months.-The furniture is adapted with great taste to the stile [sic] of the building. This grand saloon is beautifully decorated with paintings by Rebecca, executed in his best manner. The tout ensemble of the building is, in short, perfect harmony. alb3683200 The Kitchen of a French Post House. Artist: After Henry William Bunbury (British, Mildenhall, Suffolk 1750-1811 Keswick, Cumberland). Dimensions: Sheet (Trimmed): 6 1/2 in. × 9 in. (16.5 × 22.8 cm). Etcher: (?) Thomas Rowlandson (British, London 1757-1827 London). Publisher: (?) Rudolph Ackermann, London (active 1794-1829). Date: 1803 (?).Bunbury traveled through France and Italy in 1769, and produced a series of humorous drawings poking fun at foreigners. He showed "La Cuisine de la Poste" at the Royal Academy in 1770, and John Harris made a related etching in 1771.This later print was likely etched by Thomas Rowlandson and published by Rudolph Ackermann around 1803 as part of a set that revived Bunbury's early designs. Post houses were inns situated at regular intervals along busy roads to offer lodging, refreshment, and horses for hire. Post riders relied on them to change horses often and maintain a brisk schedule, and an example strides into the kitchen here at right wearing heavy boots.
